Select Photos from Miami Art Fairs
by Nish / about 1 month ago
An oft heard line in the art circles of the Miami art fairs this past week was that the “real business is conducted at night.” Is Miami-Basel about selling works or meeting the right people at one of the many exclusive velvet rope events? Read more of the post
Helmut Newton: Fired
by Nish / about 1 month ago
This Helmut Newton show opens on November 29th in Berlin. There was a recent NYC artworld controversy over a cease and desist order that blogger Paddy Johnson received for posting a nude Newton photo of Naomi Campbell in reference to a Campbell retrospective photo exhibition at Art Photo Expo in Miami . The Campbell hosted opening in Miami is expected to be one of the bigger parties of the Miami Fairs (Dec2-7).
Crazed Hipster Erupts at RAW in Williamsburg
by Nish / about 1 month ago
The WGA’s RAW release party advertised an art fight, a live competition of artists creating works on canvas. One crazed 110 pound woman took the “art fight” a bit too seriously. The confused crowd stared as a young woman attacked blank canvases. I may have been heard saying, “this is terrible”...I like most of the crowd thought this was the art fight. As one of the real artists tried to stop the insanity of the “Ultimate Art Fighter,” the crowd stared and awkwardly laughed thinking that the artists were taking this whole fighting thing a bit seriously. When the bouncer carried the crazed woman away, the crowd suddenly realized that the blank canvasses had been ruined by paint, fists and insanity. The artists made due and the show went on. Other than this, RAW was a success with WGA galleries open all night and Artlog artists on display throughout the after-party.

Chanel in Central Park (this year's Gates?)
by Nish / 2 months ago
Three and half years ago, the Gates of Christo and Jeanne-Claude, inspired New Yorkers. They seemed to wipe out the surrounding city noise and transport visitors on a journey through New York’s past and present. The openness and accessibility of the art seemed consistent with the egalitarian ideals of Central Park.
2008’s Chanel in Central Park seemed more likely to evoke visions of high spending bankers, exclusivity and an invasion of Madison Avenue on our beloved playground. Yet, upon entering the free exhibition, there is a feeling of escape from the problems of New York as you are transported into a future world that is beautiful and invigorating. Though visitors are not in control as they were with the Gates (guided by MP3 players narrated by French actress Jeanne Moreau), it is still an inspiring experience.

The Cloisters
by Nish / 08 Oct 2008
There is no easier and better escape from Manhattan than a trip to Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Cloisters . Though technically in Manhattan, you feel like you have been transported to a European hillside (with a slight buzz of cars). The surrounding park overlooks the Hudson river and the collection comprises approximately five thousand works of art from medieval Europe, dating from about the ninth to the fifteenth century.
Tibetan Monks hit the Hamptons: Parrish Art Museum & Southampton
by Nish / 15 Sep 2008
This weekend, I chilled with some Tibetan Monks at Pink Elephant in the Hamptons. Well, they were not at the clubs, but were creating a beautiful sand Mandala for the Parrish Museum in Southampton. I encountered a fun summer-beach-days-are-over exhibition “Sand: Memory, Meaning, and Metaphor” and some other interesting sites.
